Brian McArthur: Running Rabbit Clay Sculpting
November 1st

Coinciding with the reception of the outdoor rabbit sculpture, the RAPG is pleased to partner with the University of Regina for a one day demonstration workshop with Brian McArthur.

Brian is going to lead a methodical step by step demonstration of how he creates a rabbit sculpture with the use of a wooden armature.  Starting with the initial design and drawing stages, then the design and use of the armature.  The key aspects to modelling a form with a sense of life and movement, to the final stages of cutting and hollowing out the form, then reassembly and the finishing steps.

An Alberta native, Brian McArthur has been developing and diversifying his artistic skills  throughout the span of his career. His formal arts education started at Red Deer  College’s art diploma program, then to the University of Regina, SK for a BFA and an  MFA at The Ohio State University in the US where he excelled at large sculptural  installations and developed an expertise for teaching. In 1999 he and his wife started  Voyager Art Inc, an Alberta company that makes decorative tile and public art, where he  is a project manager, designer and creates a variety of public art installations in bronze,  aluminum, glass mosaics and bas relief tile murals.

Simultaneously he maintains his art practice and sells his ceramic sculpture through  retail shows and galleries. Brian’s personal work focuses upon Canadian folklore and  its importance to identity. He juxtaposes both whimsy and a seriousness to capture the  essence of his subjects and creates a story that resonates with viewers. His sculpture  can be found in the permanent collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The  Red Deer Museum, the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and the  International Museum of Ceramics in the Czech Republic.
